This personal dictionary provides an initial list of 1,100high-frequency words, plus plenty of blank lines for newwords chosen by the student or teacher. Additional words canbe selected from textbooks, spelling lists, literature, orother sources. A section in the back of the book providespages for contractions, the names of friends and familymembers, and other categories of words.The process of addingwords that are relevant and personally meaningful engagesstudents in learning and remembering. It also facilitatesdifferentiated instruction by enabling each student to addwords appropriate for that student. Students then refer totheir personal dictionaries when writing, so the words'correct spelling is frequently used and reinforced.
